Artistic, Managing and Producing Directors
David Chantler: Founded Trickster in 1979. Trained in clowning with Tom Cox in Canada, in clowning and mime with Sigfrido Aguilar at the Estudio Busqueda de Pantomima in Mexico, in theatre and actor training with Richard Fowler at the Odin Theatre in Denmark, and improv and movement with David Schein at the Mangrove Studios in San Francisco.
Sheryl Chantler: Sheryl has been with the company since 1982 and has a dance degree from Scripps College in California. She has trained with Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham in New York, with Richard Fowler at the Odin Theatre in Denmark, and with Whoopi Goldberg in San Francisco.
Company History
Trickster Theatre was created in 1980. The company has performed at Children’s Festivals around the world and has done more than 3000 performances in schools across Canada.
We are a company of physical theatre, which simply means that the physical component of the performance is developed before the dialogue--and plays a more important part.
We developed our unique Artist-in-Schools-Residency Program as a result of our experience in creating audience interactive theatre works, and our background and training in a variety of performance styles. Our artists are all experienced professionals with backgrounds in at least 2 of our core styles: clowning, physical theatre, improv, and dance.
