PD and Workshops

The Act2Learn programs can be part of your school in a number of ways. From PD day workshops, classroom visits to website support, we can make a difference in your school. All of these programs can be added to a residency program and funded by the AFA.

PD Day Workshops

A PD Day is a great way to introduce the Act2Learn methods and Lesson Plans to teachers. If you choose to integrate a Pd day with the Residency program, it makes a good follow-up process, allowing the teacher to see how “acting out” the curriculum can help in teaching the subject, reviewing it, and presenting it as a play at a Celebration of Learning, assembly or concert.

Typically, a PD day involves leading the teachers through a number of Act2Learn lesson plans, as well as looking at the ways in which the creative writing process can be enhanced by physical brainstorming methods.

In a full day PD session we would take the morning to go over sample science lesson plans from each grade level. These might look at colour, water, sound, rocks and minerals, light and shadow, electricity, properties of air and phases of the moon.

The afternoon session would look at the creative writing process and how physical brainstorming, and storyboards can be used to get students farther down the path of creative writing. The process demonstrated here is the same one that we use to create a show in a week - it just stops after the initial creation stage rather than progessing through to rehearsals.

Classroom Programs

After doing a PD day, teachers are ready to try the process in their classroom. Teachers may choose any lesson plan from the Act2Learn web site and we’ll demonstrate how to use theatre techniques to bring that lesson alive in their classroom.

Each demonstration would take place in the individual classroom, and the Act2Learn Leaderwould move from class to class. Each class session would typically be about 1 hour long. From 4-6 sessions could be scheduled into a day.

These programs are all custom made to fit the needs and wishes of each school. Please call for more details and examples of how these programs have run in other schools.

Act2Learn Lesson Plans

The Act2Learn Lesson Plan website is full of Lesson plans that will assist teachers in providing student learning opportunities. Most of the lesson plans contain FLASH diagrams that operate as movies to clearly demonstrate how to teach a curriculum component physically.

Fees

The basic cost of this program is $600. per day* (Calgary), however fees are also dependent on location and funding availability. The minimum overall booking is one full day (A day involves 1 Act2learn leader for the full school day)

This program can be funded in the same AFA application as a 5-day theatre production residency. The 2 programs must happen in the same 3 month period.

* Bookings outside of Calgary will need to be negotiated due to travel.
